The Gossip - Jealous Girls (Back Yard / Kill Rock Stars)

4/5

By: Alex Lee Thomson

The Gossip

We all need the valour of Gossip in our lives as there's none like 'em, with their soulful 60's-esque kitsch vocals and weeping and downcast filthy guitars. Cavorting and indiscriminate licks are merely the blanket that wraps their punk-hearted, aggressive songs and 'Jealous Girls' is at the axis of their unremitting crusade.

Shocking, fierce, active, unrefined yet beautiful and absorbing, it's more than a great follow on to 'Standing In The Way Of Control', and with a bluesy spirit over a dance-floor pace can only allow their success to swell to incalculable levels. It's a sing along gone wrong and pop music beaten around the head with a dead cat until only unrecognisable ruins of sound emanate from the coherently strict bass line that persists throughout... yet somehow you're drawn in like a chav to a sporting goods store, or pretentious people to Six Feet Under. The point is that this song won't escape you, and you can't escape it!

You'll find your eye balls tensing out of your head and parts of your compassion dying the more you listen to it and while the craving you'll understandably have to dance like a robot on the fritz will overpower your will to make it to the end of the track without embarrassing yourself, you'll nevertheless spend several minutes in well-timed convulsions. It's Gossip's best chorus and easily one of their better songs and although there's a sense that some of the authority that they're capable of has been lost in the mix, it's nonetheless an exceedingly controlling and potent track.
