Switches - Drama Queen (Degenerate)
4/5
By: Alex Lee Thomson
With their latest song, Switches have accidentally done something quite remarkable indeed; made glam (sounding) rock cool again, in a way that The Darkness overdid and Scissor Sisters were just to damn shite to pull off. No, they're not sporting glittery eye makeup and sparkly spandex, but the music itself is kitsch, electrifying, packed with a "whoa hoo" verse and stands quite nicely as a shrine to the utmost glam rocker of them all, the immortal Marc Bolan.
There's a fast paced and pounding verse that meanders into powerpop choruses and eerie Tim Burton-like bridges and post choruses, but cut away the glitz and OTT determination of the song and you're still left with a framework of modern day indie and punk that rivals their Vines roots and confirms them as one of the hottest bands around.
The song may be too pop for some, but by being intrepid enough to take on a style as brave as glam and mix it up with modern guitar based indie; you have to give them some respect as the final product is one of great impact, reward and resolve. Switches are a fabulous band and like a box of Milk Tray in Mamas house, you never know what you're going to get, and sometimes you're lucky enough to get something as defined, obsessed and influential as this.
