Assembly Now - Leigh on Sea (Fandango)

4/5

By: Gareth Roberts

Assembly Now - Leigh on SeaYou wouldn't think from the title that this song would be anything more than a dull, greyish, generally depressing number whose only positive facet would be that it conjures up images of Morrissey's Everyday is like Sunday video.

But judge it at your peril, upon listening you'll realise that you couldn't have been more wrong. Yes, the song is indeed about visiting Leigh on Sea, but rather than languishing in the morbid scene, Assembly Now seem more comfortable ripping it up in their jerk-pop style that, whilst undeniably ubiquitous of late, is rarely executed as well as this.

"Give me a song!" yelps Gavin in a voice resembling something along the lines of Pennie Automatic crossed with Kele Bloc Party. Indeed, as a point of reference it's not hard to imagine Bloc Party playing this song, you know, before they went kind of all serious.

Anyway, it's a grand little tune, and I wouldn't be surprised if by this time next year all your mates will have heard of them as well as you.
