The Hussy's – EP (Fat Cheerleader)

3/5

By: Christiana Spens

The Hussys

My puppy, April, is a big fan of the Hussy's, especially when I absent-mindedly dance around my room - her little eyes brighten, her tail wags to the beat - it's all very sweet. The Hussy's are that kind of band - pop sounds and cute lyrics and a baby doll voice - it's the kind of music you might listen to while eating ice-cream by the pool.

That's probably why I'm attracted to it: it's winter and I don't have a pool, but this is the next best thing. Their latest EP includes "Tiger", a sultry tune that reminds me a tiny bit of Lilly Allen, but softer and better played. There's something childish about it, just a little sulky, wishful, pouty. "Napolean" again displays a contagious melody and soothing voice and I start to think of Blondie and kittens and laughing gas. "We Expected" tells a little story about some girl who went to Cambridge and lost her spark - it's bittersweet like those strange sweets you always get in a pick 'n' mix and make you shiver. But then everything is cute and happy again for "Marty", even if the singer seems to be a bit discontent with whoever Marty is.

The Hussy's put together addictive little pop songs, worth listening to, fluffy like clouds of candy floss if you're that way inclined. It's music for a rainy day, carefree and pretty and possessing flavours of cinnamon and sugar and sherbet, a vodka mudshake kind of record. Which is all very well, only on this particular rainy day I'll rather an espresso.
