The Bronx - Shitty Future (Wichita)
4/5
By: Jacob Dunkley
When I first made an acquaintance of the album from which this single is lifted last year, 'Shitty Future' really stuck out as being one of its highlights. With some bands, it's great to hear them grow and change, to hear them push the boundaries of creativity and mature like a fine wine. By contrast, some bands can do no wrong by delivering more of the same, and The Bronx are one of those bands. The fact that this single could indeed have been on their first album is, for a band such as this one, not a bad thing, and where some of the new record sees them experimenting with ever growing diversity, 'Shitty Future' is typically punk f**king rock, the antithesis of almost everything else around - a good thing. Variety is after all the spice of life and not turmeric.
They are Rocket from the Crypt for those of us too young to enjoy it properly first time around, combining punk rock with some rock 'n roll riffs and then adding a bit more punk rock to finish off the equation. The best thing about 'Shitty Future' is the opening, the way it kicks in is all about the 'eugh!' uttered before the guitars begin (something you'll understand on first listen). With this, we've been blessed with 2 minutes 10 of pure ferocity, and it really doesn't matter that we can't work out what's being sung all the time. It's all about the delivery. What really matters is that The Bronx are back and haven't decided to pick up the synthesisers just yet.
