Clinic - If You Could Read Your Mind

There are a few bands one can instantly recognise after a mere first 30 seconds of listening. For some it's a bad thing, the fact their songs all sound exactly the same. For others, they've done a good job in creating a familiar sound that's unmistakably theirs. It could be said that Clinic are a mixture of both. There's no arguing that they have a sound of their own, but declaring the new singles from recent LP 'Visitations' are a new direction would be being rather thrifty with the truth.

Though to give credit where it's due, 'If You Could Read Your Mind' is at least noticeably different from previous single 'Harvest'. There's more of an emphasis on guitar with an almost surf or rockabilly style riff going throughout, Ade Blackburn's indecipherable vocals sounding like they're sung through gritted teeth more than ever. The wolf-like whooping and echoing harp all add to the eeriness.

Possibly the most sinister of all their releases, 'If You Could Read Your Mind' might not be a million miles away from what's been heard before, though it's unmistakeably and unavoidably Clinic, and that means it's without a doubt weird.
