New Young Pony Club - The Bomb (Island)
4/5
By: Jacob Dunkley

You have to agree that New Young Pony Club's initials look a bit like those of the New York Police Department when written down. There is however a very slight difference between them (only slight, mind) - where one is trained in the art of dealing with crime in one of the roughest, biggest and most sprawling metropolises in the world, the other by comparison is doing that slightly overdone trick of copying all manner of synth based 80's bands yet adding all the polish that modern production can muster. See, told you it was slight.
Oddly, I was a little disappointed when I first encountered NYPC's signature tune, 'Ice Cream'. It was around the first time I heard CSS, who just struck me as being a bit similar and a bit better. But it'd have been foolish to write off NYPC just then...
'The Bomb' is the new, simply titled single from the not so simply named band and with it they begin to show the maturity that their previous 'Ice Cream' single lacked. It's lyrically and musically a step up from their last release and is hopefully a sign that this band will soon really start to flex their muscles. It's not original, no - but NYPC are working their way into my heart. 'The Bomb' makes me feel like I don't want to be sat here in this chair but actually dancing to it, and that ultimately is a good thing, unless you consider me dancing to be something to be avoided.
Klaxons beware, someone may be trying to edge in on you here. And this lot are a band that can - gasp - sing as well as put some beats together.
