Cold War Kids - Hang Me Up To Dry (V2)
4/5
By: Thomas Hannan
I love this. I'm absolutely, unshakably, clearly and distinctly convinced of that. Quite why I love it is another matter, and that's a little worrying. Cold War Kids are fast becoming one of my favourite bands, and yet I'm finding the joy in this, their signature tune, really rather difficult to pin down.
Perhaps that's because there's really very little going on in it. It's based around the most simple of riffs, the verse is rather mumbled, and it's only when the vocals reach that delightful top register in the chorus that the whole thing really bursts in to life. Other than that, it's just a pretty good bass sound...
Scrap that, it's an incredible bass sound. It hooks you in right at the start, the kind of noise that promises that an amazing song will emerge on top of it and do it justice. And as such, you listen intently to those mumbled words, waiting for that chorus, not at all bored even though the riff the bass is playing is terribly simple because it just sounds so gosh darn fantastic.
And just then, you realise why Cold War Kids are becoming one of your favourite bands - they appreciate things like restraint, simplicity and sonic texture. And not only do they understand these three, but on 'Hang Me Up To Dry', they've mastered them.
