Tracey Thorn – It’s All True (Virgin)
3/5
By: Chris Helsen
Tracey "Everything But The Girl" Thorn returns with brand new single 'It's All True' after an absence of 5 years to raise her family. Having decided not to make another EBTG record - opting instead for a solo album - she has enlisted a supporting cast of dance music names to take the place of Ben Watt. 'It's All True' is co-written with no less than three of these guns for hire (Ewan Pearson, Darshan and Sasse Lindblad) and the sum total of the combined influences is a slice of electro house infused with the sounds of Studio 54.
Thorn's principle collaborator Pearson has been turning heads with his work with Goldfrapp and The Pet Shop Boys, the remnants of which are clearly visible here. The production is top notch, the bass line suitably lively and the pastiche disco sound pleasant enough. But what drags this decent track from the middle of the road is Ms Thorn's vocals. Her voice is one of unmistakeable tone. A tone that is maybe not to everyone's tastes but one that has guaranteed Thorn a successful 25 year career. Here it is all very familiar during most of the verse, but really hits the mark as she tests her range heading into the chorus.
'It's All True' will please DJ bar turntablists and superstar DJs alike and is likely to feature on a swathe of dance compilations before long. There is the usual extensive range of remixes across the various single releases to keep all relevant parties happy. Essentially this is a quality Tracey Thorn vocal over some bleepy, percussive disco music. If that sounds like your thing, you'll love it.
