Metric - Empty (Drowned In Sound)
4/5
By: Gareth Roberts
One of the standout tracks from the 'Live it Out' album, 'Empty' more than deserves its chance to shine alone. It's a slow burning little number, the gentle guitar gradually being joined by the rest of the band, Emily's cute as a button voice narrating the whole affair.
But then, in typical Metric fashion, everything goes nuts as a riff big enough to knock down a small building explodes in a whirl of feedback, Emily's voice remains as gentle as ever, never deviating from the subdued and child like vulnerability it exudes, providing the calm at the eye of the storm.
As is the done thing, it all slows down again, but rather than opting for the clichéd slow build up to a crescendo approach again, slow it stays; "I'm so glad that I'm an island" coos Emily in her innocently seductive fashion (yes, I'm getting a bit carried away here aren't I...?).
At not far short of 6 minutes long, its unlikely to get Radio 1's vote, but that has always been the appeal of Metric anyway - they're brill, but not every Tom Dick and Harry has heard of them. If that's what Emily means when she describes herself as an island, (although lets be honest, that theory is presumptuous to say the least) then we too should be glad of it.
