Cat Power - The Greatest (Matador)

4/5

By: Sofie Jenkinson

Cat Power - The GreatestThis here's the leading track from Chan Marshall's most recent and most highly acclaimed album of the same name, 'The Greatest', which was re-released late last year, and it's a one song perfect embodiment of the album's dark, sticky nature. It's a warm, down to earth track which depicts and strikes a chord with certain elements of the human condition and the struggle of life.

A silken ruby red ribbon winds its way around a troubled heart, tugging as each rich ivory key is plunged downwards. Marshall's honey soaked yet acidic-edged tones carefully tread a path lined with misspent ambition and the beauty of resigning to a certain fate.

Her vocals are laid on a bed of slow paced, minimal percussion in tandem with equally slow paced, doom-laden piano and undercut by a subtle yet emotive string section, all courtesy of the now ever present The Memphis Rhythm Band. It collectively shatters your heart, gently, into a million pieces and leaves no moments for regret. It places behind a bittersweet impression on the lips as the last note ends before thoughts of the magnitude of it all have even begun.
