FlyKKiller - FlyKKiller (BMG)

3/5

By: Jacob Dunkley

FlyKKiller - FlyKKillerWhen I first approached FlyKKiller (yes, with two capital k's, that's not a typo), I was expecting from the cover and name to hear some hellish kind of Scandinavian death metal band - and you couldn't blame me. Look at it! However, once it entered my stereo I encountered something very, very different...

This certainly has the cinematic, electronic hints of David Holmes (who remixes one of the tracks) rather than the brutality of death metal, and on first listen I have to say I was less than impressed, though indeed this may be down to the fact that it didn't meet any of my expectations or preconceptions I had unfairly levelled against it.

Yet the more you listen, the more you become accustomed to it. I think I mean this in a good way - not like a bad rash, for example. You just get a little more in to it with every spin. The song itself is mellow, downbeat and minimalist electronica with spoken word vocals running throughout. It retains a dark and haunting feel at all times, though it never fully progresses into the track you hope it will.

Heck, I prefer the David Holmes remix to the original - it's the first proper dance remix you'll have heard form him in a while, and it really brings out the best in a track which otherwise might go forgotten. Still, the most important lesson is to never judge a book by its cover - that extends to records too, it seems.
