The Rain Band - 'The Rain Band' (Temptation)
3/5
By: Matt Tomiak

Moody, murky and very, very Mancunian, The Rain Band's eponymous debut-LP draws upon a quarter of a century's worth of the great Manc guitar acts, tinged with the added, bolstered urgency of newcomers to the block.
So, amidst the blend, elements of Joy Division, New Order, The Stone Roses, Oasis and Doves are all to be found across an album full to the brim with unsmiling, grimy northern swagger. Yet whilst 'The Rain Band' scores highly for aggression and attitude, there's occasionally little light in the trio's pugnacious dance-rock.
But it doesn't stop there being some fine moments throughout; opener 'Knee Deep & Down' bodes well, as does a pulsating, eerie 'Fist Of Fury' and the menacing 'Island', all of which provide welcome changes of pace. Admirably forceful and a strong statement-of-intent for days so young, upon further exploration of this dingy, sleazy imprint, there could be fanaticism to back the promise.
