The Early Years - The Great Awakening EP (Beggars Banquet)
4/5
By: Matt Tomiak
One E.P., four tracks, and four very different musical dishes served up by this epic trio.
Opener 'Say What I Want To' initially establishes upcoming trio The Early Years as purveyors of tempestuous, chest-beating anthemics - imagine The Killers covering 'American Girl' by Tom Petty, with just a dash of Interpol.
Quite the change of place on following track 'On Fire', however, which at first possesses a faraway, twinkling Postal Service-ish feel, before blossoming into something a little like the Stone Roses' 'Don't Stop.'
To conclude, 'Autumn Song' resembles Keane playing Midlake, whilst the concluding 'A Little More Version II' a spaced-out, five minute long, Spiritualized-ish dirge. If, as they say, variety is the spice of life, then The Early Years provide a most welcome musical seasoning.
