Billy Talent - Fallen Leaves (Atlantic)

4/5

By: Jacob Dunkley

Billy Talent - Fallen LeavesThe thing with Billy Talent is that all their songs pretty much sound... the same. Now, this is something that acts both for and against them. On the plus side, they're consistently well written, though they tend over a whole album to merge in to one long, cumbersome song.

'Fallen Leaves' is the third single to be shipped off 'Billy Talent II' and though it unfortunately doesn't quite measure up to the strength of the first two singles, 'Devil in a Midnight Mask' and 'Red Flag' - which are far more in your face and infectious - that doesn't mean its poor in the slightest. In honesty it would after all be unfair to completely judge an outfit who are arguably Canada's finest punk band and their new single solely in contrast to their previous efforts, so the task of judging it on its own merit shall begin now.

The structure in this song is mature and features several hooks, both on vocals and guitar that intertwine together and help produce a pounding and well written accessible punk song that steers well clear of any 'emo' labels that would be wrongly levelled towards Billy Talent. It's catchy, that's unavoidable - and if you can formulate a positive opinion on the singer's voice then it's likely you will do the same towards this song.

And even if you can't, it's much, much better than Fall Out Boy.
