The Knife - Marble House (Brille)

3/5

By: Charlie Potter

The Knife - Marble HouseOnce again, The Knife hit (stab?) you with one of their slow yet proudly plodding electro slices of genius. The genius is mainly contained in the production... but also the melody... and the general mood... well, yes, I guess the whole thing borers on genius, truth told.

The problem is that The Knife have now three albums of this particular brand of genius, and possibly could have picked a more appropriate single than the ghostly tone of 'Marble House'. I'm so sure that this band have the ability to grab people, but in the aftermath of the long enjoyed excitement that arose from 'Heartbeats' they would have to have pulled another absolute classic out of the bag to keep up that level of giddiness. Unfortunately, I think that a lot of The Knife's potential audience will not have the patience for this. But never mind - we can just call them idiots, and hold this as a brilliant song reserved for The Knife's actual, hardcore following.

The synth that sounds a bit like a whistle instantly puts you in mind of classic Kate Bush, and once again The Knife have proved themselves to be masters of production. No one writes music like this. Nobody but The Knife. This is why I use the word 'genius' - the many subtle layers that it has taken to make an effect that is by no means subtle is hugely to their credit. Unfortunately though, it gives them a reason to do the same thing over and over again.

So I'm in two minds. The Knife are brilliant, and this is no exception, but after three albums they have either got to top themselves (not kill themselves, better themselves), or perhaps it's time to change course altogether. An acoustic album maybe. Or a really fast, extreme track...

Actually, imagine a really fast Knife track... a really extreme one that's nothing but fun... that would be incredible.
