Sunshine Underground - Borders (City Rockers)
2/5

Ahh yes, Sunshine Underground. Supposed to be 'new rave', aren't they? But having always sounded consistently more post-brit pop in a The Music sort of way, this song, as with many gone before, does nothing to carve out an alternative path.
In a sound of predominantly stripped down proportions Craig Wellington's often fragile and occasionally tedious vocals are left exposed, leading to an unavoidable sense of strain throughout the majority of 'Borders'.
That said, Sunshine Underground are a band with a knack when it comes to writing little catchy numbers spiked with disco power - even those opposed to their caterwauling cowbell assault find their foot tapping in all the right places. 'Borders' is no exception to this rule and ends with a final chaotic build covered repetitive phrasing, giving the engagingly simple instrumentation of a moment of its own. If only it started as strongly...
