Maximo Park - Our Velocity (Warp)

4/5

By: Jacob Dunkley

Maximo Park - Our VelocityOn first hearing Maximo Park, like many I considered them to be just another of 'those' bands - one doomed to a short shelf life despite possessing a few catchy hooks here and there. However, upon actually giving them a chance (why oh why must music come loaded with so much superfluous hyperbole?), I soon began to realise that they were in fact brilliant. Subsequently, so did everybody else.

So after some time out to refine their already well defined sound and it seems increase the angst within it, Maximo Park are back. And although 'Our Velocity' is not as immediate as 'Apply Some Pressure' or 'Graffiti', it's a charming insight in to what we can expect from the upcoming LP 'Our Earthly Pleasures'.

The song is well structured, well layered and comes with one major surprise - that being the unveiling of a heavier side to the band. The interplay between the guitars and keyboards works wonderfully, and though it's not the most danceable single they've provided thus far, nowhere is it written that every single you release need pack out the clubs.

Maximo Park are a band who have really carefully considered their new sound, a mindset which should guarantee them their much desired longevity. It's a single you'll warm to more and more over time, and if they keep improving at this pace, it's tantalising to think how far they could go.
