Grace - Wonderful (EMI)

1/5

By: Dan Monsell

GraceWhat is a shame is that while the whole of 'Wonderful' sounds like it's trying just far too hard, it could have slipped in with the other filthily unabashed commercial pop ,alongside "bands" such as The Feeling, without any problems whatsoever.

'Wonderful' suffers from its horrible overproduction and the fact it sounds like the Killers if they wanted to be English and write piano-pop (which, come to think of it, is exactly what the Killers are). Either way, it's not a very exciting proposition.

But, as the song plays out, there is that little something that starts to creep in and say 'even though you shouldn't like this, you're starting to get sucked in by the inoffensive melodies, aren't you?' This may be of course being due to a sublimina message actually put on the record by EMI, we'll never know though.

As this feeling starts to creep in, suddenly, the chorus hits. It comes from nowhere and not only does it sound like it's not part of the same song; it's just straight up terrible. Thousands of voices start harmonizing over the line 'must be wonderful, to just see what you want', and any inkling that maybe this is the sort of pop music that it's okay to like is dashed.

Abruptly, we go from British indie piano rock to the pop mayhem sounds of Mcfly and the Monkees. This is not credible and not good, need people be reminded. 'Wonderful' feels like a punch in the face of supposedly credible pop. It was given the time of day, there was a real want to understand, to get inside Grace's heads and even feel 'wonderful'. Unfortunately, this just didn't happen.
