I Was a Cub Scout - I Hate Night Clubs (Abeano / XL)
3/5
By: Gareth Roberts
After their excellent debut single 'Pink Squares', a lo-fi electro pulse referencing the likes of Hot Chip, I was mildly excited at the prospect of this - follow up 'I Hate Night Clubs' - dropping through the letter box.
However, initial excitement was soon replaced with confusion when after placing it into the CD player and pressing play, a strange sound emerged from the speakers, a sort of... clumsy version of Clor, gone emo. Rather than the interesting socio-referential good old English twang that characterised said predecessor, I was faced with the somewhat annoying faux-American accent and 'heartfelt' lyrical bile (sample - "do you know what I see, do you know what I feel? I don't think that you do...")
But all jibes aside, I Was A Cub Scout do at least seem to be ploughing new ground here. At the moment, it's touch and go whether anything will grow from it, but the attempt should be admired all the same.
