Kubichek! - Nightjoy (30:30)

4/5

By: Alex Lee Thomson

Kubichek - NightjoyKubichek! have broken free of the Futureheads umbrella that a squall of indolent journalists put them under last year and confirmed their identity with a live routine and album that ejects them into the stratosphere of guitar-band greatness... and this is that albums centrepiece. A flamboyant and well achieved over-ambition that has been in the minds of Alan and Frog since the early days of the band, 'Nightjoy' is what this band is about; raw and undiluted rock revolt that rankles and freaks your senses into a thrown uproar of motivation.

'Nightjoy' still maintains a heady vigour but as a whole the bands' sound has formed into a sporadic and ever-changing Bloc Party-like explosion of beats, hooks, riffs and drums that numbs the senses to all but whatever they're shoving in your face. It's an indie dancefloor classic like '22 Grand Job', 'Commercial Breakdown' or 'Wasted Little DJs' but has a naturalness and depth that keeps it going until morning, long after that kebab that you were worried about has made, like Jarvis, a second coming.

It's a manic and hyperactively intense joyride that tucks good lyrics and vocals in amongst soaring, scorching and unbearably intense guitars, then hangs shocking drums over it until there's nothing but the sound of elation and feet-on-dancefloor. Kubichek! are going to be one of the hottest and most longed-for bands of 2007, and this is among the finest of their songs. The world, meet Kubichek!
