Holy Hail - Born of a Star (Adventures Close To Home)
3/5
By: Gareth Roberts
The first offering from the fresh faced Adventures Close to Home Records - yes, the very same - Holy Hail burst out of New York with 'Born of a Star'.
A subtle, disconcertingly understated number, 'Born of a Star' meanders through simple rhythms and electro indulgences that together combine to conjure up something that is equal parts enthralling and throwaway. The sultry yet assertive vocal echoes Debbie Harry's 'rap' style - "give me money and steal my soul," says (well, to call it singing wouldn't be right) Cat. It's unprofessional, it's ramshackle... it's somewhat brilliant.
It just goes to show that you don't have to be expert instrumentalists to create something that will get indie clubs up and down the land bouncing (just ask Shitdisco); Holy Hail are a shining example of that rare thing, a band that not only knock out tunes like this with apparent ease - they also give you the hope that you too could do it, too.
In fact, I'm going to form a band right now...
