Friends of the Bride - Buckle Up Sunshine. (Young and Lost Club)

4/5

By: Chris O'Toole

Friends of the Bride - Buckle Up SunshineA group of 300, enveloped in the snug of a run down bar, the wrong side of tinsel town. Meditating on their misspent lives, they sit, waiting for the dreary punch line to end this tired misery. In walks a tall dark man, a poster boy for gallows humour; talks with a red and savage tongue of the most drastic events, with a classic swagger and endless charm. Invites you to a party, his parents are out of town and "things are going to change around here!"

You arrive, snakes crawl across the floor, placing a hex on all those they meet. Passers by reeling punch drunk, keep your eyes on your drink sunshine, "we don't want any trouble here do we?" On stage in the corner, Friends of the Bride, a dapper swing band, transported from their glitzy Vegas show ground and forced out onto the stage into the glare of the crowd. Injecting a dose of glamour and parade to proceedings as they begin to play and the neurotic self-analysis that has plagued the past is annihilated. As we move into the night the thundering bass and dry wit begin to spin the room around you, leading you astray.

The damage is done, drunk enough to perpetrate, but sober enough to destroy the evidence, you escape. Days later all you can recall is the dull menace of the band, a foreboding, terrifying sound, and realise its all that you want to hear.
