Ash – You Can’t Have It All (WM)
3/5
By: Gareth Roberts
Having reverted back to their original line-up following the departure of a certain Miss Hatherley, Ash hereby set about turning back the clock in more ways than one with a return to the catchy-as-malaria pristine pop that made their name in the first place.
Gone are the clichéd rock poses that characterised last record 'Meltdown', replaced with a lean summer tinged number that, whilst retaining some of that harder edge at certain points, is a much welcomed departure from their more recent offerings.
Beginning with a guitar sound reminiscent of 'Pipe Down', before the bass intervenes to drive us into a simple yet very pleasing romp, its Ash at the top of their current game. In many ways it characterises all that is good about this band, perfect pop hooks intertwined with a youthful discontent and a tune to die for. Ash are back, and there is no doubt that the whole is, this time around, greater than the sum of its parts.
