Travis - Closer (Independiente)

3/5

By: Matt Tomiak

Travis - CloserDear old Travis. The congenial Scots are on the brink of releasing album number five, so it's unfortunate for them that they blew their musical wad on only their second album, 'The Man Who.' And its been a case of diminishing returns ever since the days of brooding, contemplative campfire lament career-highs like 'Writing To Reach You', 'Driftwood' and, of course, 'Why Does It Always Rain On Me?'

'Closer' glides by for four innocuously maudlin minutes, Fran Healy's voice as achingly melancholic as ever, but crucially its lacks one of those irresistible, inclusive choruses of yore. Of course, directing any real vitriol at Travis would be like jeering at Bambi in the meadow shortly after the hunters shot his mum. And Rockfeedback just isn't like that. So we'll give it a charitable three stars.
