Bloc Party - I Still Remember (Wichita)
4/5
By: Christiana Spens
Spring-like and nostalgic in a manner that possesses motion and exhilaration, a sensation of watching clouds float, but on a moving train, rushing through memory and past with a mature kind of happiness. He still remembers, but he's not crying about it... There's a kind of rush to the record, the soft breathy tone of Kelle Okereke, with sultry undertones and radiating an understated confidence. There's something about all Bloc Party's tunes, and this in particular, that conjures the feeling of being in a crowd, of being part of a collective subconscious, which they tap into and express with unwavering brilliance.
'I Still Remember' is the best kind of pop song - the kind that appeals not just because it has a way of embedding its chorus in your memory, but because it appeals to the experiences and sensibilities of many. You don't have to listen hard, you don't have to think, you just need to drift in the feeling that there are some things that most people have in common - a straightforward lust for life, for sunny days, for a walk in the park... An uncomplicated desire to be with friends, to lie back and drift into a daydream...
Bloc Party take that communal desire for the familiar and the sensual, and give it a soundtrack. They're that stranger on a train - the random you meet every now and again and chat to as the buildings rush by, finding you have things, experiences in common, and reminding you that people are more similar to each other than alike. They're the band you feel you could get on with - approachable, unpretentious, and chasing after the same lusts, tunes and experiences. They're there for you, and you won't forget them either...
