30 Second To Mars - The Kill (Immortal)

2/5

By: Jo-Rosie Haffenden

30 Seconds To Mars

'The Kill' is typical of its American emo genre, self indulgent, exaggerated, and ardently dramatic - but actually relatively high-quality.

Jared Leto's extremely generic American voice is nothing special, lilting and predictably pushy. He overindulges hoarsely shouting explosively theatrical lyrics and though admittedly seduced by the sweeping black hair and dark eye liner that categorises the singer, I am not as blown always by the single itself.

Passionate, if a little melodramatic, the song doesn't breathe as tense drums drive a fiercely anxious guitar towards a pacey build and a wine-along chorus. But despite these faults, this formulaic emo track is accomplished enough and neatly produced, generating a distinctively unimaginative epic American emo nearly-anthem.
