Low vs Diamond - Heart Attack (Marrakesh)

3/5

By: Jo-Rosie Haffenden

Low Vs Diamond - Heart Attack'Heart Attack' here is polished, musically accomplished, emotional, melodramatic pop rock. Not surprising then that this American band have been signed to Marrakesh records - yes, the 'finders' of The Killers picked these guys up after just one gig too. I think we're beginning to see a pattern in their taste occurring.

Lyrically poetic with a dramatic and decidedly American depth, the kind of which you'll find mined on the Smallville soundtrack ("kiss the way we were goodbye, goodbye and farewell, first we live but then we die, we die..."), the tracks here themselves are certainly edgy enough, yet unfortunately the sound and style has been done (and done and done and done).

It must be noted however that the third track in the 'Heart Attack' package is indeed something a little special. The very simplistic and acoustic 'Life after Love' hears Lucus Field's vocals pushed as he whines familiar frustrated lyrics along side modest backing vocals and nostalgic guitar - it's a track which still comes off as powerfully sentimental, humble and eloquently executed.

Anthematic with a Barat-like baratone, this casual but highly emotional record is great for anyone who wants to hear more from The Killers, Franz Ferdinand and Muse and staunchly refuses to wait. But despite that winning end to the disc, the first 2 tracks might well be epic and frustrated-yet-uplifting guitar fuelled songs, but unfortunately they too often resemble a systematic mish mash of other bands to make them really extraordinary just yet.
