Orphan Boy - Postcode (Concrete)

3/5

By: Keri Kennedy

Orphan Boy - PostcodeWith its Spector-esque drums underneath a Joe Strummer style spoken intro, 'Postcode' starts on a sombre note of burnt out cars, boarded up shops and kids high on fumes. It's another tale about coming from a crap town - no offence Grimsby - that these upstarts of 'Council Pop' seem to be churning out to high acclaim (Lamacq and Riley to name a couple).

It takes a turn one minute in with a thrashing chorus that's angsty and aggressive, not just giving a nod but taking a full bow to the British Punk era way before their years. Vocalist Paul Smith repeatedly chants; "I got the noose made out for you" over spiky guitar and frenetic drums, before returning to a plodding outro that I'm not sure is really needed.

Orphan Boy are working class Punk-Pop lads treading the same boards as Arctic Monkeys, writing about real life with the ability to make it into a listenable - if a bit rough around the edges - tune.
