The Hold Steady - Stuck Between Stations (Vagrant)

4/5

By: Matt Tomiak

The Hold Steady - Stuck Between StationsAccording to some biographical details posted online, Brooklyn-via-Minneapolis quintet The Hold Steady were born out of an epiphany achieved after a couple of members were watching The Band's swansong concert film, 'The Last Waltz'. Deciding that modern-day alternative music just didn't quite cut the mustard, they vowed at that very moment that they should form a band that harked backed to those glory days.

We slightly suspicious journos like to describe such contrived tales 'possibly apocryphal'. However, 'Stuck Between Stations' is a ready-made antidote to such scepticism, ready to blast away any doubt with its heroic, pulsating, punch-the-air, Tom Petty-meets-Springsteen classic Americana.

'She was a real good kisser/and she wasn't all that strict of a Christian' hollers singer Craig Finn exuberantly, evoking a youth that you might not have actually experienced but nevertheless want to celebrate long and hard.
