Gallows - Abandon Ship (Warners)
4/5
By: Jacob Dunkley
Hype, more often than you'd think, is there for a reason - someone, somewhere, thinks something's really, really good - and they've told a lot of other people that very opinion. Gallows have been receiving a lot of the stuff recently. Now, their debut album is facing a re-release and the band's D.I.Y. ethics are being signed away... thankfully, not one bit of this matters. 'Abandon Ship' proves the hype is deserved.
This single is the perfect track to showcase the enthusiasm and energy Watford's Gallows possess. The riffs come crashing all around you like something off an early Refused record and in it I can also hear other bands present, everything from Small Brown Bike to Minor Threat.
It's been a while since I found a hardcore band in England that really excited me (not since The Steal in fact), and Gallows have filled that void for me. It's the antithesis to all the over produced pseudo-punk we hear on the radio and is a sign that the D.I.Y. scene can produce bands who sound more real and exciting than we often give it credit for.
In short, this song is fantastic, and this band deserve everything that they've worked so hard for. Thanks to them, we can crank our speakers up loud and enjoy one of the most exhilarating singles of the year.
