Scout Niblett - Dinosaur Egg (Too Pure)
5/5
By: Keri Kennedy
The award for best opening lyrics this year goes to former Nottingham resident Ms Emma 'Scout' Niblett for 'Dinosaur Egg'', or rather Mr. David Shrigley, the renowned cartoonist whose poems are reinterpreted by Scout amongst others on an LP to be released later this year.
The resulting Shrigley/Scout 'collaboration' - if you can call it that - is a perfect match of low-fi off kilter vocals, simple guitar and an equally offbeat subject matter. 'Dinosaur Egg' is typical Shrigley nonsense, and the nature of Scouts' delivery compliments the surrealism of Shrigleys' poetry like they were made for each other.
Quietly plucking at acoustic guitar and urgently wailing "Dinosaur egg, oh dinosaur egg/When will you hatch?/I've got a million people coming On Friday/And they expect to see a dinosaur/Not an egg", Scout makes what could be seen as utter twaddle into a beautiful piece of alt-folk, which makes one think they should get together more often.
