Cute Is What We Aim For - The Curse Of Curves (Fuelled By Ramen)
3/5
By: Alex Lee Thomson
Not since the early days of Jimmy Eat World has an American band had so much promise for being the next decent pop-punk outlaws. The whiskey crying, Blink-riffing playfulness of 'The Curse Of Curves' starts ominously like Fall Out Boy but with a whip-wit and delicate lick that flounces into the accidentally dance worthy pre-chorus, and leans swiftly more towards the better portion of US bands from 10 minutes ago.
With bands of this ilk, and being reasonable there's not that much fresh about them, there's a tendency for the vocals to be whiney, irritating and ultimately way too Californian in over the top cliché... frontman Shaant however manages to thrust a more subtle Nightmare Of You-ish style forward leaving this a rather understatedly flamboyant US rock song that's bountiful in spinning modern electric guitar youth. You know it's not as great as you want it to be, and you know you should be massively ashamed, but bugger it if you don't just get carried away in the moment of their glittering chorus and All American Rejects akin verses.
To heck with it... this has all the fun of JEW without any of the worry of having to buy their follow up albums. Buy this one and love it 'til it dies.
