Cherry Ghost - Mathematics (Heavenly)
4/5

This single is wonderful. It's brilliant. It's just had some of us lightly skipping around the room nodding our heads back and forth. In essence it's simple, dull even, but all the details delightfully come together as they did for Echo And The Bunnymen and late era Pulp, being faint but somehow massively suggestive and poignant. There's so much substance to this single you can only begin to imagine the scope of a whole album.
The Lennon-esque eccentricity of the lyrics coupled with the Sparklehorse-like approach to song making culminates in a deeply touching and endearingly charming tune that's full of bells and whistles designed to draw you in and keep you there. You can't really find a chorus; instead you pick out your favourite lines and lash them out at innocent people walking past you on the street, believing that this song is going to make this band very popular indeed, at least among the intricate song loving fashionistas of the world. You can hear it time and time again and not only does it not become trying, it widens and uncurls before you like a setting sun landscape, transforming from day to night with a capricious charm and compelling musical aptitude. It could do with maybe a bit more power to really push it out of the flickering Guillemots light, but as debut singles go, this is a conquest by any standard.
