Carina Round - 'The Disconnection' (Disconnected)
3/5
By: Matt Tomiak

'Definitely not manufactured pop' in the PJ Harvey mould, Carina Round is a long-serving Brummie songstress and this is her second-mostly very bleak-LP.
Cathartic, wrathful, desolate, harsh: these are the kind of words that spring to mind when looking to describing the nine tracks that constitute 'The Disconnection.' Cheerful this most certainly isn't: only a couple of minutes in and 'broken hearts and razorblades, the wreck of the tortured combination' are being referred to.
Not that this is necessarily a bad thing; indeed the fabulously scabrous opus 'Into My Blood', with its whirling, writhing guitars, might well be the best of the batch on display.
Still, kudos to Carina for having the sense of humour - we assume - for including the (apparently) self-deprecating line, 'There's a lot to be said for this morbid self-attention' on 'Lacuna', in the midst of all this austere emoting.
