Polytechnic – Won’t You Come Around? (Shatterproof)
4/5
By: Dan Monsell
With a name as cold and hard as Polytechnic, one might expect to hear the kind of raw, bone-chilling sparseness of fellow Mancunians like The Longcut. Instead, with these one-time Transgressive signings you get melodic majesty and guitars that jangle so hard that you're left a dizzy mess on the floor.
Wondrously so, these elements collide in 'Won't You Come Around?' to produce a contender for single of the summer. Whilst this slab of Shins-like sun in the park goodness is so pop that it's almost throwaway fulfilment, there is also a depth here that can enrich our lives with the power of a melody more catchy than cholera.
With this release Polytechnic have safely anchored themselves down in the burgeoning UK indie scene, where kids old enough to know better wear buttons on their t-shirts and always have an ice cream in their hand. A triumph for people who smile.
