Cornelius - Gum / Cue (Korova)

3/5

By: Dan Monsell

Cornelius - GumOn 'Cue' a broken beat ticks away behind some meandering atmospherics as a vocodered Japanese voice whispers 'give me a cue; I think I've nearly found you. The sound of music, the sound of my own voice..' After releasing music for over a decade as a producer and solo artist, this release from Keigo Oyamada, aka Cornelius, heralds another quiet success from one of Japan's most successful and eminent electronic artists.

'Gum' and 'Cue' demonstrate two sides of what Cornelius is capable of producing. Whilst 'Gum' is an electro-rock stomper that ends up in bleeping noise all over the floor; 'Cue' deals with Oyamada's pop-influenced electronic sound-scapes, demonstrating how pop music can progress alongside technology, without losing its soul along the way.

Quite why songs like 'Cue' are pushed aside in the charts so that we can put our hands up for Detroit we will surely never know.
