Future of the Left - Adeadenemyalwayssmellsgood (Too Pure)
5/5
By: Chris O'Toole
The new Future of the Left single opens with a faintly country chant of 'Roll on, roll on, roll on...' before an industrial guitar crashes in and chops the wagons to kindling. Whilst the guitar keeps crunching, Andy Falkous starts spitting out lyrics with his famous sneer. Still sharpening the cruellest wit in town, Falkous crams ninety nine disjointed syllables into a single line, bouncing them along Kelson Mathias' bass lines to give Future of the Left their distinctive sound. Once established the beat builds, as if they were pushing a gigantic snowball to the top of a mountain, to a dramatic climax, before stopping on pinhead. It is as though the band, having reached the pinnacle of the mountain, looked around, decided they didn't like the view and threw themselves back into the gutter below.
The B-side, 'March of the Coupon Saints' is equally frenetic. Drummer Jack Eggleston hammers almost as hard as Todd Trainer (of Shellac fame and an obvious influence on the band), giving space for the two guitarists to ply their simplistic, caustic trade. The track builds to choral climax and clocks in at less than two minutes. Sparse, taut and frightening.
In short the train is still firmly on track for Falkous and his new band. Whilst fellow ex-Mcluskyers Shooting at Unarmed Men seem to have splintered and fled the country, perhaps through fear, Future of the Left are firing warning shots across the bows of the audience and building toward an almighty debut album later in the year.
