Operator Please - Just A Song About Ping Pong (Brille)

3/5

By: Dan Monsell

Operator Please - Just A Song About Ping PongAustralian pop-punk teens Operator Please are currently at the very epicentre of the furious hysteria that is the hype machine. A 'Radar' feature in NME and the general media frenzy since their recent whirlwind trip to the UK last month has seen them become a fast new favourite for the kids in the know. Back in their motherland, they've recently secured support slots on Australian tours for both Kaiser Chiefs and Maximo Park. This is a group of youths with 'young achiever' written all over them.  So, the question is, do this rabble of Aussies, boasting an average age of practically seven; have a debut single to match that hype?

This single has the pent up energy of your little brother on a fistful of speedballs, but the whole affair feels a bit like they've taken the raw, unadulterated sugar-rush punk-and-roll of Be Your Own Pet, cleaned it up where it was rough and ready around the edges, and served it up so the kids can lap it up like candy floss.  But, for two minutes nineteen, in one of those rock and roll dancing clubs, perhaps having had our share of jelly tot vodkas (so hot right now), this stuff's hard to stay still too. With its hand-clapping, kick out the jams at the school dance goodness, expect to hear this in the background at this summer's festivals tents while some 14 year olds in front of you throw up from an overdose of beer and sweets.

What? I am not bitter about the fact that they're going to be so big and they're only, like, 17.
