Kubichek! - Stutter (30:30)
4/5

For anybody that bothered to notice, The Futureheads were one of the best guitar bands in the country, and shame on you all for not going out there and buying their records. Luckily, music has given you a second chance in the form of Kubichek!, and this song is their proper introduction to the nation...
It's not their first single, but this is the first time they've had sufficient impetus to really make a big deal out of a release and they really couldn't have picked a better missile from their anthem-heaving debut, 'Not Enough Night', than this endlessly progressive guitar belter 'Stutter'. Of late, Kubichek! have become one of the most illustrious live acts in the country, renowned for ambitiously gritty and atmospheric sets, and though 'Outwards' and 'Just Shut It Down' are among their performance highlights, this track is no stranger to waves of gleeful clapping to sounds of random body-swaying and haphazard dace-crazed celebration. Part of the reason this track should be on your record player is because it's audaciously forceful in a similar way to Bloc Party, only more northern and dirty (naturally), with a structure that could leave the song playing forever if it wanted, boredom free in a 'Can't Stand Me Now' kind of way. Another reason is that unlike a lot of songs in circulation is has a massive identity, pulling back from the fabrication of the UK music scene that's become all tight and whimsical recently with vocals that are heaving and dominantly officious among guitars and drums that have just as much magnitude. This song showcases not just the personality of Kubichek! as the collection of bandmates they are, but as the group they have formed, and the breathtaking music they have come to create.
The rising drama of the song is present throughout its advancing melody but never takes over, instead allows the tune to take a natural development into the climax it inevitably reaches. At parts it sounds thick and industrial, with Frog and Alan taking a tag-team approach to blaring out the songs lyrics at you, yet elsewhere it sounds bitter and melancholy with an exposed core, both ideals joining together impeccably and outwardly pervasive while maintaining a reserved simplicity. 'Stutter' is one of the best guitar songs from one of the best guitar bands of the year and as Kubichek! become more and more important, this track will gain only more energy and significance as 2007 unfolds. This isn't a band who have a catchy melody and a few OK tunes like countless others around, including The Twang and The Enemy, they're a serious band with a lot of great music to put across, and none of it more essential than this screamingly remarkable anthem for the detached.
