The Rumble Strips - Motorcycle (Fallout/Island)
4/5
By: Jacob Dunkley
The new single from indie hopefuls The Rumble Strips is actually a really rather interesting piece of work. Yes, I sound surprised, maybe - but that's because something about them, before this listen, made them seem like the kind of band I'd never give a chance, but part of the beauty of this job is that occasionally one can be surprised and intrigued.
No, The Rumble Strips aren't quite The Kooks or Fratellis rip off I expected them to be as the horn intro opens the song perfectly, almost threatening to go in to Dirty Pretty Things' 'Bang Band You're Dead'. What we are confronted with in the shape of 'Motorcycle' is a slice of pop which evolves wonderfully as the song progresses, hinting back towards pop songs of yesteryear even bringing vintage Bowie to mind.
I'm not expecting this song to be an indie anthem that everyone will be singing, but it's an enjoyable few minutes of unadulterated escapism that shifts and changes unexpectedly but always holds its shape. 'Motorcycle' is a hugely fun song that will hopefully give the Rumble Strips the chance they need to find a loving group of fans.
