The Fratellis - Ole Black ‘n Blue Eyes (Island)

2/5

By: Michael Cragg

The Fratelles - Ole Black 'n Blue EyesIs it me or is this the fifteenth single to be taken from The Fratellis inexplicably successful debut album, 'Costello Music'? God it sounds like it. Now I've got nothing against them per say ('Chelsea Dagger' was damned catchy), but it grates on me that a band as distinctly average as this can take up so much airplay time and still offer up nothing new or exciting.

'Ole Black 'n' Blue Eyes' sounds like The Kooks covering The Fratellis covering The Kooks, and carries the same whiff of lazy summer evenings that producer Tony Hoffer seems to conjure up in his sleep. The sense of déjà vu isn't helped by The Fratellis' penchant for dropping the word 'Chelsea' into every song. Still, it gives you something to ponder on while the rest of the song plays out.

There was a time when bands like The Fratellis would fall by the wayside due to their general inertia and yet somehow, along with The Kooks, they have helped create a new genre of British music; the vaguely jaunty, somewhat ramshackle Drabpop. It won't catch on as a musical genre, yet I fear its numbers may continue to swell. Bring back Menswear I say!
