New Young Pony Club - Ice Cream (Island)

2/5

By: Michael Cragg

New Young Pony Club - Ice Cream Re ReleaseThe press release that accompanies this describes it in unsurprisingly hyperbolic terms, calling it 'an anthem in waiting' and a 'provocative song'. Play it to anyone, however, and they'll say, "Isn't that the song from that Intel advert?" It suddenly becomes less of an anthem and more of a fairly catchy sound bed for a universally used computer-based product.

New Young Pony Club look like the kind of band 2007 was invented for, the kind of band that CSS and Bonde Do Role already look like and for that matter sound like. So we get a lolloping bass line, some squelchy synth sounds and some artfully tossed out lyrics laced with innuendo (we're pretty sure Bonde Do Role are being filthy, but at least they do it in Portuguese). And yet it never really gets going, as if it was just too much effort to really give the chorus a kick or to take some risks- and adding a cowbell doesn't make it fresh!

Still, they look good in photos and nowadays that counts for a lot, but it's hard to forget the corporate sponsorship when listening to them preen about "Sid and Nancy". If you want some artfully amateur dance pop then listen to CSS or the Klaxons, and if you want some straight ahead dance music that sounds current but devoid of image then check out Simian Mobile Disco. The name of their website seems to sum it up perfectly; it's called 'we are pony'. Mmm...
