Ulrich Schnauss - Quicksand Memory EP (Independiente)
4/5
Dutifully epic and amorously wistful with a sensual undercurrent, 'Quicksand Memory' takes you on an emotive, sentimental journey of digitally enhanced euphoria. Blissfully unaware of its own trance-inducing richness, these 4 tracks are the perfect soundtrack to a coma, enveloping the listener into the dreamy requiems it creates.
Worthy of a comparison to Explosions in the Sky but less dramatic and more modest, the work of Ulrich Schnauss is both subtle and interesting with an icy warmth to its distortion, particularly in 'Medusa', where it sounds as though the whole thing is being broadcast from within a glacier mint.
Although to some the 'Quicksand Memory' EP could just sound like computer beeps bursting through non-descript fuzz, Shnauss' post-rock ambience creates a sub-reality soundscape, glorious, watery and pensive, which absorbs the listener into a lamenting dream.
