The Aliens - Robot Man (EMI)

Disco-rock trio The Aliens here kindly offer us their latest single 'Robot Man', which sadly proves to be a somewhat repetitive funk-fried and wail-laden dance-rock groove in which Primal Scream and Jamiroquai meet in a gimmicky yet surprisingly tangible three and a half minutes of party-sized throwaway fun.
Yet 'Robot Man' manages to incorporate half a dozen genres whilst simultaneously nullifying them all. What starts off as a pleasantly constructed harmless dance-rock revival quickly becomes a chameleonic bore, which slyly asserts itself using the over-repeated and over-zealous chant of "I'm a robot man".
Although not denying the energy and skill of this talented three-piece, it would be Rick Waller sized fib to call this instance of their work a real achievement. The Aliens have fooled themselves into thinking that some sort of mid nineties revival is happening. It ain't.
