Nine Inch Nails - Capital G (Island)
4/5
The second secretion from new LP 'Year Zero', 'Capital G' - which was foreshadowed by other synergetic goodies purposefully leaked prior to the official release - boasts a sexy, self-assured and politically charged ethic that promises to satisfy older fans while seducing and enlightening newer ones.
A filthily, raunchy synth bass riff drives this intellectually smarmy yet world-weary call-to-arms whilst heavily present industrial laptop percussion pushes grubby vocals over a reassuringly rambunctious Terminator 2 style beat backdrop.
Spinning a yarn about the imminent self-imposed demise of the human race, 'Capital G' makes its presence known with cultural vim and a gloriously memorable melody. It does remarkably well to retain poetic finesse without becoming a deluded requiem, and on it Reznor and his cohorts prove again that delivering strikingly original, artistically refined and culturally focused grooves is still a task at which they are the very best. This tightens their white-knuckle stranglehold on the genre of their own creation all without coming across as over familiar and narcissistic.
