The Pigeon Detectives – I’m Not Sorry (Dance To The Radio)

4/5

By: Alex Lee Thomson

The Pigeon Detectives - I'm Not SorryYou want to know something... I love this. Maybe it's because I bummed around the Leeds music scene for about 18 months a few years ago and realised that iForward, Russia! were incredible and anything associated with them, and Whiskas offshoot label 'Dance To The Radio', was likewise as important. Maybe it's because at the time I posted a message on Duels forum saying how much I loved this band, to which somebody replied that they'd never make it. It could even be because I've just switched to cider after years of beer binging... or maybe it's all of the above that makes me, and hopefully you, love this with everything we have to offer.

An idiot would say that this is another band walking through the trenches of The Twang and The Enemy, especially The Enemy, but there's so much more to this song, and by nature the band, than these two aforesaid swindlers. This song, a mere glimpse at the brilliance that the Leeds wreck-wielding maniacs can assemble, is a fast, royal-like entrance to the world of modern guitar music. It's grinding yet jokey and remarkably teasing, it's simplistic and thoroughly engrossing. When the vocals screech at you like a drunken person in the shower you can't help but be taken by them, the voyeuristic vitality clasping you by the clammy, nervous hand and leading you to the dancefloor as though a jumpy sibling at a wedding, and when you get there all you can do is stamp your feet in time with one of the best guitar-lacers since The View wasted those little DJs and whatnot. You might be worried about liking this, as though it'll become annoying after a while as so many tracks do these days, but as somebody who has spent many months drooling over this one, please take it from me that this song never gets boring or mundane, if anything it gets more serious and resolute.

This song is a thrashingly awesome stab at a genre that so many bands are pulling at, but they make it happen... for three and a half minutes Pigeon Detectives own you with this song, there's no question about it. It's laddish exuberance without the yobbish accompaniment and while the riffs and massive vocals will have you smashing plates around the house in a transversally melodic and passion fuelled way, the guitars run off with what's left of your preconceptions about letting another band into your headphones. Play this loud, play this with a drink in your hand... but for God sake, just play this.
