Los Campesinos! - You! Me! Dancing! / It Started With A Mixx (Wichita)

4/5

By: Michael Cragg

Los Campesinos! - You! Me! Dancing!Recently signed to the brilliant Wichita label, Cardiff seven-piece Los Campesinos! have been causing a minor storm of late, not least for their incendiary live shows including a slot at the recent Wireless festival. If you haven't already noticed they also have a certain way with a song title, and this double A-side follows the fantastically monikered 'We Throw Parties, You Throw Knives'.

'You! Me! Dancing!' may not be a grammar student's idea of perfection but musically it gets within spitting distance. After a minute or so of guitar noodling it suddenly wakes up, finds it's feet and gets a bit Go-Team! with a clattering face off between guitar, drums and a joyful xylophone solo. That phrase 'joyful xylophone solo' may make some of you head back to the home page, but in my book there's nothing better (maybe some hand claps). Lyrically, it steers clear of existential meandering, choosing instead to let the title tell you all you need to know. It also deserves your respect for being nearly six minutes long and therefore never likely to grace the airwaves anytime soon.

By contrast 'It Started With A Mixx' clocks in at just eighty seconds long, bringing a nice sense of balance to proceedings. It's a song about the process of making a song and features the brilliant line, "Trying to find the perfect match between pretentious and pop". They needn't have worried; the proof is in the pudding.
