The Piney Gir Country Roadshow – I Don’t Know Why I Feel Like Cryin’ But I Do / I’m A Train (Truck)

4/5

By: Chris O'Toole

Piney Gir - I Don't Know Why I Feel Like Crying But I DoPiney Gir is a faux American country singer from somewhere in the Home Counties; but is in possession of a honey dripping voice and a penchant for Steele guitar. Her single 'I Don't Know Why I Feel Like Cryin' But I Do' is a master class in brief, affecting lyrical ingenuity and musical subtly. Sung with the disbelieving voice of a small town girl arriving in the big city for the first time the track is emotionally raw and positively spiteful to her spurned loved. Having just been stung by her first failed tryst Piney Gir is still confused as to what happened, and what, if anything, she can do to rectify the situation. Her tone is loss and confusion, a girl afraid, confused and a long way from home.

The title track is backed with a cover of 'I'm A Train', originally by Albert Hammond. Clocking in at less than two minutes it's a diminutive but perfectly formed country nugget. Quick, suggestive and heartfelt Gir rattles through it, imbuing the number with her own faint youthful charm; over as quickly as it begins. Satisfying, if a little light weight.

Intimate without being insular, engaging without being explosive; Piney Gir provides a brief sugar pill of earnest country rock.
