Queens of the Stone Age - Sick Sick Sick (Interscope)
2/5

It's difficult to know quite how much Queens of the Stone Age coast on their reputation, but they have been doing it to a considerable degree for some time. Wounded by the loss of bass player Nick Oliveri and seemingly running ever more quickly out of ideas, the band have struggled onwards as a diminished force in American rock music in recent years. Gone are the populist sensibilities and anthemic choruses that bought them commercial acclaim with their 'Rated R' album, replaced with a sort of caricature metal band; too soft to rock, to heavy to be pop.
'Sick, Sick, Sick' is a case in point. Taken from the Queens' new album, 'Era Vulgaris', the track is a three minute trad rocker. Sure it still has the chugging, industrial power guitar and deadpan, quasi-comatose, vocals. And yeah the stomping chorus is still there; but now Queens of the Stone Age are stomping with the shoes of little children. A thirst for popularity has diluted whatever Kyuss used to stand for; high quality rock with pop leanings has been inverted into something approaching a parody of itself.
